Brilliant Kannur Youngster Puts Google to Good Use, Becomes Millionaire at 21!

It was a computer gifted to TNM Jawad which overturned his fortune and changed his life for the better. The 21-year-old from Kannur, Kerala, is a millionaire today and owns a company that rakes in an annual income of ₹2 crore. He also owns a house and a BMW car—and all this is thanks to Google!
Today, Jawad is the managing director of TNM Online Solutions, a multi-crore IT establishment that deals with e-commerce, web designing and app development, and has a large clientele base from across the world.
All of 10, a young Jawad made every possible use of the computer his father had gifted him along with an internet connection. Interestingly, Jawad’s original name is Mohammad Jawad TN, and it was his father who created his Gmail ID.

“At that point, the user ID with my name wasn’t available, and instead Google came up with the suggestion ‘TNM Jawad’, and the name stuck! When I look back, that instance was the beginning of everything good in my life,” says the 21-year-old to The Better India.
Jawad made sure that his studies never suffered. After scoring an ‘A1’ grade in all subjects in his exams, he had a lot of time on his hands and decided to explore the field further. He spent his vacation time understanding how great performing websites were different and what made them better.

By then, Jawad’s interest started becoming more pronounced. Realizing that there was a looming scope for website development, he decided to take the plunge by registering his first domain name—TNM Online Solutions—and running it as a virtual company. He started out by announcing on Facebook about designing a website at prices starting from ₹1,000.
Soon enough, enquiries started pouring in, but he admits to being technically ill-equipped to handle almost 99 percent of the queries that came his way.
When nothing seemed to be working for Jawad, the silver lining came in the form of a teacher from his school (where he was pursuing his higher secondary education) who had seen his Facebook post about website building. “Her brother had been an interior designer and was in need of a website. She came looking for me and requested if I could help, and guaranteed that she would pay the full amount I had quoted,” he recalls.

“Things started going from bad to worse, and I knew there was no time to brood over what had happened. Instead, I raised the subject of starting my own company to my parents and requested my father to somehow source ₹1 lakh for the venture. Knowing my penchant for computers and proclivity for web-based work, they wholeheartedly supported my ambition,” Jawad says.
And thus on 23 June 2013, 17-year-old Jawad flagged off TNM Online Solutions at a small office in South Bazaar. Ably juggling school and work, Jawad would rush from school to office and work till 9:00 p.m., following which he would discuss business with clients till 2:00 a.m.

Jawad’s mother, whom he calls his backbone, was a constant pillar of support throughout his days of struggle.
What makes his commitment even more worthy of appreciation is that he managed to score 85 percent in his higher secondary exams.
Jawad cites his participation in the YES Kerala Summit for young entrepreneurs that gave him and his venture the visibility it needed and brought in many new projects, as a landmark achievement in his career.
The young man was always keen on living in his own home because, despite the fact that his father had a well-paid job while he was abroad, his family had always lived in rented houses. At the age of 19, he fulfilled this dream by building a home of his own in Varam.
Today, the 21-year-old works with clients from over 18 countries and has opened an office in Dubai, which has a clientele base of over 900.
Another significant trajectory for TNM Online Solutions started when Jawad started incorporating Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) for the websites he created, making it much easier for websites to be found during a search.
For his incredible achievements at such a young age, Jawad was recently felicitated in the UAE and bestowed with an award by Dr Ram Buxani.
At present, Jawad is busy with a new initiative. He has started the TNM academy that provides professional training in areas like web designing and digital marketing to youngsters. The academy was recently inaugurated in Kannur and is open for anyone, irrespective of age.
Jawad’s resilience and determination deserve to be admired and recognised, and his story will surely motivate everyone. We wish him great success in life and hope that all his future endeavours are fruitful.

• In 2022, NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) collides with the smaller body of the Didymos binary asteroid system

ESA’s Hera mission, now under study, will examine the aftermath of this impact to help determine whether humans can deflect threatening asteroids.
Hera will also demonstrate the ability to operate at close proximity around a low-gravity asteroid with some on-board autonomy similar in scope to a self-driving car, going on to deploy Europe’s first deep-space CubeSats, and potentially also a micro-lander, to test out a new multi-point intersatellite link technology.
Hera will be highlighted during Asteroid Day on 30 June, an annual opportunity to raise awareness of the threat and opportunity posed by the numerous rocky bodies traversing space.
As part of the UN-recognised Asteroid Day, hundreds of regional events take place world wide, with 78 countries so far having hosted concerts, community events, lectures and much more.
This year, the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and ESA will team up to co-produce a packed webcast, streamed live from the new ESO Supernova Planetarium and Visitor Centre in Munich, from 13:00 CEST.
The programme will highlight some of the most recent activities in the global hunt for risky asteroids, as well as conversations with ESA planetary scientists, asteroid experts and a variety of guest presenters. Fascinating insights into the 2013 Chelyabinsk event will be presented, as well as discussions around the possibility of one day sending humans to asteroids.

Is Nipah the next Ebola?

Not quite, says Stanford University epidemiologist Stephen Luby, who has studied the disease in Bangladesh, where there have been either outbreaks or sporadic cases almost every year since 2001. The two known Nipah strains currently circulating aren’t all that easy to transmit.
While the mortality rate for those infected can be high, infection is not all that common. Before this latest outbreak, about 300 deaths had been linked to Nipah, most of which occurred in Southeast Asia and Bangladesh. But the actual number could be higher, Luby says, with some cases going untested or unreported. Because the symptoms of Nipah infection are similar to those for other diseases, including encephalitis and the flu, cases may be misdiagnosed. India has only two main diagnostic laboratories, both in the central city of Pune, equipped to confirm Nipah infection.
“In order for a disease to spread globally, each person has to infect at least more than one person,” Luby says. But a person with Nipah tends to infect either zero or one other person, according to a 2009 study published online by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. By comparison, a person with measles can infect on average 10 others who aren’t vaccinated. And people who caught Ebola during the 2014 outbreak in West Africa tended to pass it on to between one and three others, PLOS Current Outbreaks reported in 2014.
But “anytime the virus is inside a human, it has the opportunity to evolve and adapt to that human-specific environment,” Luby says. The worst-case scenario is a future strain that can transmit more quickly or easily among humans, which is why the WHO and global health experts are urging more research into vaccines and treatments.
“I hope what we learned from the Ebola outbreak, is that if we have the ability to prepare, we should do that,” says Emily Gurley, an infectious disease epidemiologist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore
In fact, in response to this latest outbreak, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), a global alliance that formed last year to encourage and finance the development of vaccines, has announced that they will be granting $25 million to two American biotech companies to accelerate work on a Nipah vaccine. Researchers have tested experimental Nipah vaccines on animals, but have yet to conduct clinical trials.
Are fruit bats the problem?
Having been around for millions of years, bats have probably carried infectious diseases for nearly as long, Gurley says. Several bat species can carry viruses that are deadly to humans, including Ebola, Marburg, SARS and Nipah, without getting sick themselves (SN: 3/9/13, p. 10).
But scientists say that villainizing bats is not the answer. “They’re a crucial part of their ecosystems,” Gurley says. “They are also really important pollinators.”
Several factors have increased the chance of bat-borne viruses being passed humans, including development that has encroached on the bats’ natural habitats. “It used to be that these bats stayed far away from human populations,” Wang says.

what we know about the deadly Nipah virus.

VIRUS SLEUTHS  Forest officials in the south Indian state of Kerala place a bat found in a well into a container for testing to see if it might be carrying the Nipah virus.

KOCHI, India — The rare and deadly Nipah virus has emerged in southern India, killing at least 11 people and causing more than 25 others to be hospitalized. Although global health officials consider that, so far, to be a relatively small outbreak, they’re worried.
Nipah is on the World Health Organization’s priority list of emerging diseases that could cause a global pandemic, alongside Zika and Ebola.
“This is the first time we’ve seen the virus in south India,” says R.L. Sarita, the director of health services in the Indian state of Kerala. “And we want to make sure that it stays contained here.”
Those infected suffer a quick onset of symptoms, including fever, vomiting, disorientation, mental confusion, encephalitis and — in up to 70 percent of cases, depending on the strain — ultimately death. Here’s what we know, and don’t know, about this incurable disease:
How is the Nipah virus spread?
Several species of fruit bat that live throughout Asia carry Nipah. During outbreaks in Bangladesh from 2001 to 2007, most people contracted the virus by drinking raw date palm sap that virus-carrying fruit bats had also sipped and contaminated (SN: 12/19/09, p. 15).
Bats can also transmit Nipah to pigs and other livestock, which can then pass the infection onto humans. And humans can spread the virus through saliva and possibly other bodily fluids. One victim in the latest outbreak was a 31-year-old nurse who had been treating Nipah patients.
To find the source of this outbreak, health officials in India are testing local bats, livestock and food samples, including mangos that may have been bitten by bats, found in the home of a family that lost four members to Nipah.

HANGING OUT Several species of fruit bats are known to carry the Nipah virus without getting sick themselves. Cases in Bangladesh likely involved greater Indian fruit bats (Pteropus giganteus), such as these pictured. The animals can spread the virus through their saliva and urine.

How does the virus cause infection?

Nipah and its viral cousin Hendra latch onto a proteins called ephrin-B2 and ephrin-B3 on the surface of nerve cells and the endothelial cells lining blood and lymph vessels, researchers have found. Nipah can also invade lung and kidney cells.
Virologists who have studied Nipah’s behavior in animals think that in humans, it initially targets the respiratory system before spreading to the nervous system and brain. Most patients who die succumb to an inflammation of blood vessels and a swelling of the brain that occurs in the later stages of the disease.
Why are epidemiologists worried about Nipah?
“The No. 1 reason is that it’s just so lethal,” says Linfa Wang, who heads the emerging infectious diseases program at the Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore. In fact, the villain virus in the 2011 film Contagion was based on Nipah .
Since the virus was first documented in 1998, there have been small, contained outbreaks almost every year in southeast Asia and Bangladesh.
But Nipah has the potential to spread farther — due to the fact that its fruit bat carriers live across a wide range extending from Australia to West Africa.
In addition, some strains are more lethal than others. An outbreak in Malaysia in 1999 was caused by a strain with a 30 percent mortality rate, while the Bangladesh outbreaks involved a different strain that killed 70 percent of infected humans. Scientists aren’t sure why the mortality rates are so different.

Ivanka Trump’s photo with son sparks backlash over US policy to take away children of undocumented migrants

Critics were quick to point to a “zero tolerance” policy announced earlier this month by Attorney General Jeff Sessions that authorizes border security agents to take away the children of people who enter the United States unlawfully.
Ivanka Trump is facing an online backlash for tweeting a “tone deaf” photo of herself cuddling her son as outrage grows over a federal government policy to separate the children of undocumented migrants from their parents.

The eldest daughter of President Donald Trump, who serves as an advisor to her father, posted the picture of her with her infant son on Sunday, with the caption: “My <3! #SundayMorning.”
Critics were quick to point to a “zero tolerance” policy announced earlier this month by Attorney General Jeff Sessions that authorizes border security agents to take away the children of people who enter the United States unlawfully.
The government places such children in foster homes, but Steven Wagner, a senior official in the Department of Health and Human Services told a Congressional committee last month the government was “unable to determine with certainty the whereabouts of 1,475” minors after attempting to contact their sponsors in the last three months of 2017.
“Isn’t it the just the best to snuggle your little one -- knowing exactly where they are, safe in your arms? It’s the best. The BEST. Right, Ivanka? Right?” tweeted comedian Patton Oswalt.
“If there were a Tone-Deaf Olympics, you would be its Michael Phelps,” added John Pavlovitz, a writer.
Many others tweeted using the #WhereAreTheChildren hashtag.
Donald Trump, for his part, blamed opposition Democrats for the “horrible law” in a tweet on Saturday -- though there is no law mandating the policy and it was not immediately clear what he may have meant.

The First Official Glimpses Of Kangana Ranaut's New Manali Home

New Delhi: Actress Kangana Ranaut's Manali bungalow has been one of the most-talked about celeb home for a while now. Kangana opened her doors to Architectural Digest India for the first glimpse into her Manali mansion for the magazine's May - June 2018 issue. She had initially planned a one bedroom house, ended up with a grand bungalow against the backdrop of a picturesque snow-capped mountain range of Manali. We finally have the first glimpse of the 30-year-old actress' home.

"At the main entrance, Kangana Ranaut, dressed in Gucci and Dior loafers, stands against the charcoal grey facade with strips. The white windows with louvered shutters add to the old mountain home mix," as described by Architectural Digest. (Just lovely).
"The house is huge, as you would expect it to be. But it's got that white-picket-fence charm," Architectural Digest describes her home. It was handed over to Kangana (with the interiors done) in November 2017. "I gave Shabnam (interior designer) carte blanche, except for the timber ceiling in the living room, which I took a picture of in New York, and sent to her. I trusted her with everything. Later in life, I imagine I'll have a clearer idea of my taste in interiors, but for now, I just wanted it finished while I was filming," says Kangana of the interiors that took nine months to install.
Now, take a tour inside Kangana's home.
According to Architectural Digest, Kangana's master bedroom has a classical armchair, a Jaipur Rugs carpet. The wall sconce is a customized piece acquired from Mumbai's Chor Bazaar. The bedspread is from Ralph Lauren Home.

The dining room has been designed like a foyer, the entrance passage has some of exquisite items placed at the right place and the guest bedroom has been designed by The Orange Lane.
"I thought this would be a retreat but it's the ultimate party house," she told Architectural Digest, adding that her assistant delivers wine. "My mum prefers what she calls the 'Dubai style', with chandeliers and lots of glitz. She really wanted me to do at least one 'Dubai' room!" she said.

10 Awesome, Surprising Ways to Make Your Sex Life Way Better.

Look, your sex life is probably really pretty good... but it can be fun to try something new,  most of the sex positions you see professionals engage in can feel more like they fit into the circus than the bedroom. Or maybe you're just that couple who has a great sex life, but you want to add a little spice every now and then to test your boundaries.
So, how do we take what's already pretty great and make it even better? The key is variation—routine and monotony is a one-way ticket to boredom, no matter what you're up to (or how great it can be).
  1. Take things out of the bedroom.
"I think the most important thing to continuously elevating your sex life is to make it unpredictable and less routine," says  a popular adult film star. Trying somewhere in your house that feels new can provide a rush you won't be expecting. "I highly recommend bathroom sex; all the mirrors are a major turn-on, and you can utilize sitting on the counter to let your partner go deeper than ever before," Morgann says.
  1. Don't get undressed.
Whether you're more inclined to wear a necktie or a pair of heels, wearing just an article (or three) of clothing can add another dynamic. "Your partner may not appreciate it, but if it turns you on, keep them on," says Sherry Gaba, author of The Marriage and Relationship Junkie: Kicking  Your Obsession.
3. This is one of the best ways to learn how to dirty talk! Turn on a talk-heavy porn and turn the screen around… then turn off the lights. Now you and your partner will just repeat after the actors.
"This gives you permission to say dirty, nasty, limit-pushing things that you never had the courage or inclination to say before," says Laurel House, dating coach and resident sex expert of My First Blush. "But once you get those words in your ear and hear them come out of your mouth, you've broken that barrier, and you can now introduce them into your regular routine."
  1. Slow things down.
Remember when we were teenagers and making out for hours was the sexiest thing ever? "Slow things down and spend a lot of time kissing, petting, and enjoying lots of foreplay like you did when you were teenagers—before you finally move into sex," Gaba says. Slowing things down can build up a lot of anticipation, draw things out, and make the reward worth it.
  1. Plan one super-sexy evening.
"Watch some adult videos or read an erotic book to get your minds wandering," Morgann says. "I guarantee it will help you come up with new positions and ideas." Then break out a new toy or two. "Experimenting with new sex toys and role play is a surefire way to blow both of your minds! It's imperative to keep your sex life feeling spicy, exciting, and spontaneous—and that's how you can make your sex life better and better," Morgann says.
  1. Never overlook the value of a hotel room.
Kathryn Smerling , Ph.D., marriage and family therapist with Upper East Side Family Therapy, says all couples must change up the scenery once in a while. "I once recommended to a young couple in their late 20s who were going through a sex rut to take a 'staycation' at a fun, local hotel," she says. "A little break from the routine of their home went a long way, and they didn't even have to travel anywhere to get that reprieve!"
Or if you don't want to splurge, try just changing up the time of day. "Do you always have sex at night?" Smerling asks. "Try surprising your partner in the morning one day, and you'll both notice the difference, I promise you."
  1. Put on a peep show.
Approach your partner fresh out of the shower, wearing only a towel—then tell them that you want them to watch. "Show them the foreplay you crave by trailing your fingertips over your body, teasing your favorite areas of stimulation," says psychologist, relationship expert, and sexpert Antonia Hall, M.A. , author of The Ultimate Guide to a Multi-Orgasmic Life.
"Then let the tease continue by making it their turn to show and tell," Hall says. "This can not only heat things up fast, it opens space for discussing desires and showing exactly how you like to be touched."
  1. Take the connection deeper via tantra.
While tantra can conjure images of impossible demands (like hours and hours of sex), the practices detailed are actually an incredible way to reconnect with your partner and find more pleasure than either of you dreamed possible.
"The techniques are tried-and-true for thousands of years," Hall says. "It's about connecting more deeply with your partner and tapping into your body's pleasure possibilities through breath, eye contact, and energy work that can allow for mind-bending, full-body orgasms." Now that'll amp up your sex life for a lifetime!
  1. Restore the element of surprise.
Another key to hotter sex is spontaneity—like getting naked in the kitchen right after work or leaving an event for a quickie and then coming back. "Try sending your partner flowers for no reason, cooking when usually your partner does all the cooking, or whispering in your partner's ear that you're not wearing underwear," Gaba says.
  1. Let strangers watch.
There's a naughty, exciting element to having sex in clear view of a stranger's eye—and that doesn't mean it has to be illegal or dangerous, either. Push up against a hotel window, the kind with see-through glass—and wear Eyes Wide Shut-style masks if you want to hide your identity. "Knowing that eyes might be seeing and therefore minds fantasizing is a huge turn on," House says. "And still, you're safe in your room where you can then go lay down on the bed and finish (if you haven't already)!"

Cheapest And Costliest Cities In India To Buy Petrol,Diesel: How Much You Pay

Rising petrol and diesel prices are a result of higher crude oil prices along with weakness in the rupee against the US dollar, among other factors.
Besides global crude prices, excise duty imposed by the Centre and VAT by the states also determine the final price that consumers have to pay at the pump. So there is a wide variation in petrol and diesel prices across different states. Currently, petrol in Mumbai is most expensive compared with the rest of the country, according to Indian Oil's data on fuel prices in metros and state capitals. At Rs. 86.08 per litre, petrol price in Mumbai hit a fresh all-time high on Monday.

Petrol and diesel prices are the cheapest in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar, compared to the rest of the country, data shows. While petrol is sold at Rs. 67.42 per litre, diesel currently retails at Rs. 64.8 per litre in Port Blair, as of May 28, according to Indian Oil. With that, Port Blair, Panjim, Agartala, Aizwal and Itanagar are the five cities with minimum petrol prices. In case of diesel, other than Port Blair, Itanagar, Aizwal, Chandigarh and Imphal have the minimum prices.

Here are the petrol and diesel prices across the country, as listed by Indian Oil Corporation:

Real Life 'Spider-Man' Awarded French Citizenship for Climbing 4-Storey Building to Save Dangling Toddler

In less than a minute, he pulls himself from balcony to balcony and grabs the four-year-old as a neighbour tries to hold the child from an adjoining flat.
Paris: A Malian migrant who saved a four-year-old child hanging from a fourth-floor Paris balcony after scaling the building with his bare hands was honoured by French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday and offered citizenship.

Two days after his daring Spiderman-style rescue — viewed millions of times online — Mamoudou Gassama was received by Macron at the presidential palace.

"All the (Gassama's) documents will be put in order," Macron told the sporty 22-year-old who has become a national hero, referring to his immigration status.

In the meeting, live footage of which was carried on the president's Facebook page, Macron gave Gassama a medal for bravery and also proposed that Gassama join the French fire service.
"I was not thinking of anything. I went straight up", Gassama, who wore jeans and a short-sleeved patterned shirt, told Macron, recounting the episode.

"Bravo," Macron replied.

"I'm pleased because it's the first time I've received a trophy like that," Gassama, who arrived in France in September 2017, said after receiving his medal.

Gassama leaped into action Saturday evening on seeing a child dangling in mid-air from a balcony half-way up an apartment block in the multi-ethnic 18th district of the French capital.

The video shows him pulling himself up from balcony to balcony as a man on the fourth floor tries to hold on to the child by leaning across from a neighbouring balcony.
On reaching the fourth floor Gassama, who lives in a hostel for immigrants, throws one leg over the balcony before reaching out with his right arm and grabbing the child.

Firefighters arrived at the scene to find the child had already been rescued, with a spokesman saying that "luckily, there was someone who was physically fit and who had the courage to go and get the child."

Praising Gassama, government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux tweeted: "This incredibly brave act, which is true to the values of solidarity of our Republic, must open the doors of our national community to him."

His story instantly drew comparisons with that of another Malian migrant who was feted as a hero, and given citizenship, for helping save lives during a January 2015 terror attack.
Lassana Bathily helped hide hostages in the freezer during an Islamist jihadi attack on a Jewish supermarket, in which four people were killed.

Dream of a better life

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo also lauded Gassama, who arrived in France in September 2017, for his "act of bravery" as well as phoning him personally to "thank him warmly".
"He explained to me that he had arrived from Mali a few months ago dreaming of building his life here.

"I told him that his heroic act is an example to all citizens and that the city of Paris will obviously be very keen to support him in his efforts to settle in France," she added.

Tracked down by reporters 24 hours after the heroic rescue, Gassama said he had acted without thinking.

"I saw all these people shouting, and cars sounding their horns. I climbed up like that and, thank God, I saved the child," he said.

"I felt afraid when I saved the child... (when) we went into the living room, I started to shake, I could hardly stand up, I had to sit down," he added.

According to initial inquiries by the authorities, the child's parents were not at home at the time.
The father was held for questioning by police for having left his child unattended.

The child's mother was not in Paris at the time.

Ireland overturns abortion ban in landslide vote.

The pro-choice campaign won Friday's referendum with 66% of the 2.1 million votes cast.
Ireland voted by an overwhelming majority to overturn a constitutional ban on abortion in a historic referendum in this traditionally Catholic country, final results showed on Saturday.
The pro-choice campaign won Friday's referendum with 66% of the 2.1 million votes cast, the returning officer said at the central counting centre in Dublin Castle.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar on Saturday hailed a resounding referendum majority in favour of overturning the abortion ban as the “culmination of a quiet revolution”.
“What we’ve seen today is the culmination of a quiet revolution that has been taking place in Ireland for the past 10 or 20 years,” Mr. Varadkar told RTE, Ireland’s public broadcaster.
Ireland has voted by a landslide to liberalise some of the world’s most restrictive abortion laws.
“The people have said that we want a modern Constitution for a modern country, that we trust women and that we respect them to make the right decisions and the right choices about their own healthcare.”
“It’s incredible. For all the years and years and years, we’ve been trying to look after women and not been able to look after women, this means everything,” said Mary Higgins, obstetrician and Together For Yes campaigner.
‘Resounding result’
“The public have spoken. The result appears to be resounding ... in favour of repealing the 8th Amendment” constitutional ban on abortion, Mr. Varadkar told journalists in Dublin.
The outcome will be the latest milestone on a path of change for a country which only legalised divorce by a razor thin majority in 1995 before becoming the first in the world to adopt gay marriage by popular vote three years ago.
“For him [his son], it’s a different Ireland that we’re moving onto. It’s an Ireland that is more tolerant, more inclusive and where he can be whatever he wants without fear of recrimination,” said Colm O’Riain, a 44-year-old teacher with his son Ruarai, who was born 14 weeks premature in November.
A spokesman for an anti-abortion umbrella group, Save The 8th, conceded there was “no prospect” the country’s abortion ban, imposed in a 1983 referendum, would be retained. “However, a wrong does not become a right simply because a majority support it.”
Voters were asked if they wish to scrap the amendment, which gives an unborn child and its mother equal rights to life. The consequent prohibition on abortion was partly lifted in 2013 for cases where the mother’s life was in danger.
The country’s largest newspaper, the Irish Independent described the result as “a massive moment in Ireland’s social history”.
Campaigners for change, wearing “Repeal” jumpers and “Yes” badges, gathered at the main Dublin count centre, many in tears and hugging each other.
Other prospects
Reform in Ireland also raised the prospect that women in Northern Ireland, where abortion is still illegal, may start travelling south of the border. No social issue has divided Ireland’s 4.8 million people as sharply as abortion, which was pushed up the political agenda by the death in 2012 of a 31-year-old Indian immigrant from a septic miscarriage after she was refused a termination.
Campaigners left flowers and candles at a large mural of the woman, Savita Halappanavar, in central Dublin.

What is lava haze? A look at Hawaii's latest volcanic hazard

Lava from Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano is pouring into the sea and setting off a chemical reaction that creates giant clouds of acid and fine glass.
The lava haze, or “laze,” is created when molten rock hits the ocean and marks just the latest hazard from a volcano that has been generating earthquakes and spewing lava, sulfur dioxide and ash since it began erupting in Big Island backyards on May 3.
The dangers have forced at least 2,000 people to evacuate and destroyed more than 40 buildings. It’s also created anxiety for thousands of others about the possibility of lava heading their way or cutting off roads they depend on to get to work, school and grocery stores.

What is lava haze?
It is made of dense white clouds of steam, toxic gas and tiny shards of volcanic glass. Janet Babb, a geologist with the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, says the plume “looks innocuous, but it’s not.”
Laze is formed when lava enters the ocean and triggers a series of chemical reactions.
The seawater cools the lava, which forms a glass that shatters. Tiny pieces are picked up by the steam cloud, which contains hydrochloric acid that also is created by the interaction of lava and the ocean.
“Just like if you drop a glass on your kitchen floor, there’s some large pieces and there are some very, very tiny pieces,” Ms. Babb said. “These little tiny pieces are the ones that can get wafted up in that steam plume.”
Scientists call the glass Limu O Pele, or Pele’s seaweed, named after the Hawaiian goddess of volcano and fire.
Why is it dangerous?
The clouds contain hydrochloric acid, which is about as corrosive as diluted battery acid. It can irritate the skin and eyes and cause breathing problems.
Ms. Babb says protective masks that officials have been distributing to protect people from volcanic ash will filter particles from lava haze but not the hydrochloric acid.
Laze itself is not enough to cause serious burns, Ms. Babb said, unless someone is right on top of where lava enters the ocean. Waves also can wash over molten lava and send scalding water onshore, so people should maintain a safe distance.
No major injuries have been reported from lava haze. The U.S. Geological Survey says laze contributed to two deaths in 2000, when seawater washed across recent and active lava flows.
Who needs to be concerned about it?
Mostly people who are near the lava entry on the southern coast, either on land or in boats just offshore. Where the plume wafts depends heavily on wind direction and speed.
The gas clouds initially appear on the shoreline, but trade winds on Sunday carried plumes about 15 miles (24 kilometers) to the southwest. The cloud was offshore, running parallel to the coast.
When the winds die down, the plume can flatten out. Its size, meanwhile, depends on the volume of lava falling into the sea.
The hazards minimize once the shards fall to the ground because the glass would mix with the Earth.

What other threats do people need to be worried about?
Methane explosions could be a problem as lava flows into areas with a lot of vegetation. Ms. Babb said that is because decaying vegetation creates pockets of methane, which the lava’s heat can ignite.
Late Sunday or early Monday, lava entered and then stalled on the property of a geothermal plant. Officials earlier this month removed 50,000 gallons (190,000 liters) of stored flammable gas from the site to reduce the chance of explosions.
The plant harnesses energy from the volcano for electricity. Underground wells bring up steam and hot liquid, and the steam feeds a turbine generator.

US Warships Sail Near South China Sea Islands Claimed By Beijing

The operation was the latest attempt to counter what Washington sees as Beijing's efforts to limit freedom of navigation in the strategic waters.
WASHINGTON:  Two U.S. Navy warships sailed near South China Sea islands claimed by China on Sunday, two U.S. officials told Reuters, in a move likely to anger Beijing as President Donald Trump seeks its continued cooperation on North Korea.
The operation was the latest attempt to counter what Washington sees as Beijing's efforts to limit freedom of navigation in the strategic waters.

While this operation had been planned months in advance, and similar operations have become routine, it comes at a particularly sensitive time and just days after the Pentagon uninvited China from a major U.S.-hosted naval drill.

The U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Higgins guided-missile destroyer and the Antietam, a guided-missile cruiser, came within 12 nautical miles of the Paracel Islands, among a string of islets, reefs and shoals over which China has territorial disputes with its neighbors.
The U.S. military vessels carried out maneuvering operations near Tree, Lincoln, Triton and Woody islands in the Paracels, one of the officials said.

Trump's cancellation of a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has put further strain on U.S.-China ties amid a trade dispute between the world's two largest economies.

Critics of the operations, known as a "freedom of navigation," have said that they have little impact on Chinese behavior and are largely symbolic.

The U.S. military has a long-standing position that its operations are carried out throughout the world, including in areas claimed by allies, and that they are separate from political considerations.

Satellite photographs taken on May 12 showed China appeared to have deployed truck-mounted surface-to-air missiles or anti-ship cruise missiles at Woody Island.
Earlier this month, China's air force landed bombers on disputed islands and reefs in the South China Sea as part of a training exercise in the region, triggering concern from Vietnam and the Philippines.

Pentagon officials have long complained that China has not been candid enough about its rapid military build-up and using South China Sea islands to gather intelligence in the region.

Chinese officials have accused Washington of viewing their country in suspicious, "Cold War" terms.
China's claims in the South China Sea, through which about $5 trillion in shipborne trade passes each year, are contested by Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam.

The United States has said it would like to see more international participation in freedom-of-navigation operations in the South China Sea.

Prevention of the Nipah infection

While there is no vaccine available for the infection, preventive measures can be a key to control the spread. With fruits bats being the primary cause of infection, the farm animals should be prevented from eating fruit contaminated by bats. Consumption of contaminated date palm sap including toddy should also be avoided. Physical barriers can be put in place in order to prevent bats from accessing and contaminating palm sap.
Medical officials who are looking after the patients with suspected or confirmed NiV should take basic precautions like washing hands, using a gown, cap mask and wearing gloves. For laboratory personnel, Nipah virus is classified internationally as a biosecurity level (BSL) 4 agent. BSL 2 facilities are sufficient if the virus can be first inactivated during specimen collection.
In case of animals, wire screens can help prevent contact with bats when pigs are raised in open-sided pig sheds. Run-off from the roof should be prevented from entering pig pens. practice. Early recognition of infected pigs can help protect other animals and humans. Due to the highly contagious nature of the virus in swine populations, mass culling of seropositive animals may be necessary.

Symptoms of the Nipah infection.

Typically, the human infection presents as an encephalitic syndrome marked by fever, headache, drowsiness, disorientation, mental confusion, coma, and potentially death. During the outbreak in Malaysia, up to 50 per cent of clinically apparent human cases died. There is no specific treatment for Nipah Virus. The primary treatment for human cases is intensive supportive care.

What is Nipah Virus?

Nipah virus infection gets its name from the village in Malaysia where the person from whom the virus was first isolated succumbed to the disease.

Nipah Virus is an emerging infectious disease that broke out in Malaysia and Singapore in 1998 and 1999. It first appeared in domestic pigs and has been found among several species of domestic animals including dogs, cats, goats, horses and sheep. The infection is also known to affect human beings. The organism which causes Nipah Virus encephalitis is an RNA or Ribonucleic acid virus of the family Paramyxoviridae, genus Henipavirus, and is closely related to Hendra virus.
Nipah virus infection gets its name from the village in Malaysia where the person from whom the virus was first isolated succumbed to the disease. The virus has been listed in the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) Terrestrial Animal Health Code and must be reported to the OIE (OIE Terrestrial Animal Health Code).
How does Nipah spread or get transmitted?
The disease spreads through fruit bats or ‘flying foxes,’ of the genus Pteropus, who are natural reservoir hosts of the Nipah and Hendra viruses. The virus is present in bat urine and potentially, bat faeces, saliva, and birthing fluids. Presumably, the first incidence of Nipah virus infection occurred when pigs in Malaysian farms came in contact with the bats who had lost their habitats due to deforestation. Furthermore, transmission between farms may be due to fomites – or carrying the virus on clothing, equipment, boots, vehicles.
Nipah Virus, which is a zoonotic disease, was known to affect humans in Malaysia and Singapore after coming in direct contact with the excretions or secretions of infected pigs. Reports from outbreaks in Bangladesh suggest transmission from bats in the process of drinking raw palm sap contaminated with bat excrement or climbing trees coated in the same.
In Bangladesh and India, there have been reports of possible human-to-human transmission of the disease. Therefore, precautions are necessary for hospital workers in charge of taking care of the infected patients. Precautions should also be taken when submitting and handling laboratory samples, as well as in slaughterhouses.

Nipah virus outbreak: Death toll rises to 14 in Kerala, two more cases confirmed

The latest victim to the outbreak was 22-year-old Abin who was being treated at Baby Memorial Hospital in the city. Two more confirmed cases of Nipah were reported in the state.

The Nipah virus claimed one more life in Kozhikode district of Kerala on Sunday, taking the overall death toll to 14. The latest victim to the outbreak was 22-year-old Abin who was being treated at Baby Memorial Hospital in the city. Meanwhile, two more confirmed cases of Nipah were reported in the state.
Earlier on Saturday, according to a report submitted by a central medical team to the Health Ministry, samples collected from bats in Kerala’s Kozhikode and Malappuram districts tested negative for the virus. A total of 21 samples, including that from seven species of bats, two species of pigs, one bovine and one caprine, were sent to the National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases in Bhopal and the National Institute of Virology in Pune.
“These included the samples of the bats which were found in the well in a house in Kerala’s Perambra from where the initial death was reported. They have tested negative for the Nipah virus,” the official said.
To prevent the spread of the virus, alerts were sounded in Bihar, Sikkim, Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra. Advisories urging people to take precaution against the virus were issued, asking them to monitor fever cases if anybody has a history of travel to the affected areas, for instance, to Kerala recently.
The Sikkim health department in its statement said, “Though there is a minimal possibility of Nipah virus in Sikkim, the people need to take precaution.” It advised people not to eat fruits and vegetables bitten by birds, bats and animals.
A newly-emerging zoonosis, Nipah virus (NiV) infection causes severe disease in animals and humans. The natural host of the virus are fruit bats of the Pteropodidae Family, Pteropus genus. At present, there is no vaccine or drug to treat NiV infection in humans or animals. The primary treatment for human cases is intensive supportive care.

Asteroid That Killed Dinosaurs Caused Global Warming For 100,000 Years

A massive asteroid struck Earth 66 million years ago and triggered a series of sporadic events that wiped out nearly three fourth of life living on the planet, including non-avian dinosaurs. It has long been believed the event, popularly known as the Chicxulub impact, proved catastrophic for all of life in ways more than one, but if the latest study is anything to go by, the impact had a much broader and long-lasting effect on global temperatures.

In the past, scientists have posited the immediate aftermath of the impact resulted in a period of what has been called a “global winter.” Dust and aerosols blocked sunlight and led to a massive decline in global temperatures for a few years. But, that was just the beginning.

As the asteroid crashed into rocks rich in carbonates and triggered massive wildfires around the globe, there was an extensive surge in the carbon dioxide levels prevailing in the atmosphere. So, as the dust and haze cleared and sunlight started reaching the surface of Earth, the greenhouse gas got into action and raised global temperatures. The idea of rising temperatures has also been around for a long time, but the latest work by scientists from the University of Missouri gives us a clearer picture.
