6 of the most expensive flowers in the world

most expensive flowers in the world

1) Kadupul Flower: Priceless
Otherwise known as The Queen of the Night, this stunning white-yellow flowered cactus plant blooms rarely, only at night and its flowers wilt before dawn. This short life span makes the flower incredibly rare and technically priceless. Native to southern Mexico and South America, the bloom cannot be picked as the moment you touch it, it dies.

2) Rothschild’s Slipper Orchid/Gold of Kinabalu Orchid: £4,000
Previously named 'the aristocrat of all slipper orchids', this rare and endangered species takes 15 years to grow and bloom. Only found at Kinabalu National Park in Malaysia, the orchid grows on the slope of Mount Kinabalu between 500 and 1,200 metres in altitude. Due to its rare quality, the flower sells on the black market for up to $5,000 (nearly £4,000) per stem.

3) Juliet Rose: £2.3 million
The Juliet Rose is the most expensive rose ever developed, costing its creator David Austin $3 million (£2.3 million) over the course of 15 years. First publicly displayed in 2006 at the Chelsea Flower Show, the striking flower boasts large-headed blooms.

4) Shenzhen Nongke Orchid: £160,000
This unique man-made orchid takes its name from Shenzhen Nongke University where it was created by Chinese agricultural scientists. The rare flower only blooms once every four to five years and was sold for the equivalent of £160,000 at auction. Pricey!

5) Saffron Crocus: £9,500
With bright purple petals and orange stamens, this flower is a real showstopper. This human-cultivated flower is most famous as a spice but when it comes to making it, nearly 80,000 flowers are needed to create just 500 grams of spice.

6) Gardenia: £15-£45
Not as expensive as some on this list, Gardenia flowers have beautiful full white heads, making them ideal as wedding flowers. But Gardenias are not available to buy by the stem, only the whole plant, making them pricier than most.
